Hello and welcome to Cause of Death – 100 Seconds to Midnight. I’m your host, Jackie Moranty. I changed my mind mid-script. I decided that I needed to finish this season with a 100 Seconds to Midnight Episode on extinction. I thought that would be more appropriate, so this week, I’m going to talk about the last disease in this season. We’re going to look at Whirling Disease in Fish. Let’s begin with etiology and pathology. This will be a new pathogen for us. Myxobolus cerebralis is a myxozoan parasite. Whirling disease is caused by the actinosporean spores of the parasite Myxobolus cerebralis. This parasite has a complex two-host lifecycle. The parasite alternates between the sludge worm, Tubifex tubifex and the salmonid host. I’ve hit 15,000 downloads! That’s a big deal. I never thought this podcast would attract as many listeners as it does and I want to thank everyone for coming back and passing the word. over to the dark Side. We're really
22
00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:24.800
nice people once you get past the
true crime and scary science. Hello and
23
00:02:24.879 --> 00:02:30.039
welcome to Cause of Death. One
hundred seconds to midnight. I'm your host,
24
00:02:30.319 --> 00:02:38.080
Jackie Morante. In the last fifty
years, more than four thousand animals
25
00:02:38.120 --> 00:02:44.840
have become extinct, from invertebrates to
mammals. We've lost four thousand species that
26
00:02:44.960 --> 00:02:51.360
are vital to their habitats. It's
ninety seconds to midnight, and our wild
27
00:02:51.360 --> 00:02:58.960
life suffers under the heavy burden of
human encroachment. From logging to oil drilling,
28
00:02:59.439 --> 00:03:05.039
over to development of wild lands to
water diversion. Animals are disappearing,
29
00:03:05.639 --> 00:03:43.560
never to be seen again. Hello
and welcome to Cause of Death. One
30
00:03:43.680 --> 00:03:50.080
hundred seconds to midnight. I'm your
host, Jackie Moranti. I changed my
31
00:03:50.120 --> 00:03:54.439
mind mid script. I decided that
I needed to finish this season with a
32
00:03:54.599 --> 00:04:00.199
one hundred seconds to midnight episode on
extinction. I thought that would be more
33
00:04:00.199 --> 00:04:05.879
appropriate. So this week I'm going
to talk about the last disease in this
34
00:04:05.960 --> 00:04:14.319
season. We're going to look at
whirling disease in fish. Let's begin with
35
00:04:14.479 --> 00:04:24.560
ideology and pathology. This will be
a new pathogen for us. Mixobolus cerebrallus
36
00:04:24.680 --> 00:04:30.639
is a mixozoan parasite. Whirling disease
is caused by the actinosporean spores of the
37
00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:39.160
parasite. This parasite has a complex
two host life cycle. The parasite alternates
38
00:04:39.199 --> 00:04:46.399
between the sledge worm tube effects tube
effects and the salmonid host. The Triactino
39
00:04:46.560 --> 00:04:53.120
Mixon spores are water born and when
they are released from the infected sledge worms,
40
00:04:53.319 --> 00:04:58.959
they attach to the salmonid host by
a polar filament extrusion brought on by
41
00:04:59.040 --> 00:05:08.319
nucleoside and thigamotropy stimuli. This is
rapidly followed by active penetration of the sporoplasms
42
00:05:08.399 --> 00:05:15.680
into the fish epidermis. Once the
parasites are in the sporoplasms multiply and travel
43
00:05:15.720 --> 00:05:20.240
along the peripheral nerves and the central
nervous system to reach the cartilage, where
44
00:05:20.279 --> 00:05:28.360
they form trophosites, which continue to
multiply and produce more spores. M.
45
00:05:28.439 --> 00:05:34.040
Celebrellus mixospores are released into the environment
when infected fish stye or when they are
46
00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:41.959
consumed and excreted by predators. Mixospores
that are released into the water are ingested
47
00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:46.560
by t tube effects, where they
develop intercellularly in the intestine over a period
48
00:05:46.639 --> 00:05:53.759
of about three months. They go
through four developmental stages inside of the worm,
49
00:05:54.160 --> 00:06:00.560
then they mature as actinospores. The
salmonids then ingest the worms, and
50
00:06:00.639 --> 00:06:04.680
the parasite cycle begins all over again
with a new host. That is pretty
51
00:06:04.759 --> 00:06:12.160
much the life cycle of M.
Cerebrallas. Most parasites will begin as larvae
52
00:06:12.199 --> 00:06:15.560
in the environment, then they'll move
to an intermediate host, then to their
53
00:06:15.600 --> 00:06:21.519
final host. Let's talk about salmon. It's for a minute. Salmon Idia
54
00:06:21.959 --> 00:06:28.879
is a family of elongated bony fish. The last three vertebrae of these fish
55
00:06:28.920 --> 00:06:34.240
are upturned. The fish that are
specifically affected by M. Cerebrallas are salmon
56
00:06:34.399 --> 00:06:40.959
and trout. The main species of
fish that are infected are rainbow trout.
57
00:06:42.399 --> 00:06:46.079
I'm going to make a quick mention
that rainbow trout are considered an endangered species
58
00:06:46.120 --> 00:06:51.240
in some areas of North America.
They've not only been threatened by whirling disease,
59
00:06:51.560 --> 00:06:58.000
but pollution and invasive species taking over
their spawning grounds has also caused a
60
00:06:58.160 --> 00:07:02.079
decline in populations. I promise that
while I'm on my break, I'll be
61
00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:09.720
releasing the house that Jack built.
That episode is all about how invasive species
62
00:07:09.759 --> 00:07:15.759
are threatening native species across the world. In the next episode on Extinction,
63
00:07:15.040 --> 00:07:23.399
I'll be talking about how pollution affects
wildlife. They're both really important topics.
64
00:07:24.279 --> 00:07:29.319
Whirling disease has become a serious threat
to salmond species, and it's just about
65
00:07:29.399 --> 00:07:34.959
impossible to control. The pathogenicity of
the parasite is due to the host immune
66
00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:41.560
response. The parasite evades the immune
system of the salmonid, and this allows
67
00:07:41.800 --> 00:07:46.639
m cebralus to proliferate within the host
during the first stages of infection. The
68
00:07:46.720 --> 00:07:54.240
lack of an appropriate regulatory response from
the immune system results in an excessive inflammatory
69
00:07:54.279 --> 00:08:01.720
response. With special focus on T
and B lymphosite and immunoglobular responses. The
70
00:08:01.839 --> 00:08:07.959
parasite attacks the cartilage of the head
and spine. Symptoms increase as the parasite
71
00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:16.000
invades the nervous system. Fish infested
with the parasite may exhibit a whirling behavior,
72
00:08:16.319 --> 00:08:20.360
head deformities including a sloped head where
the cartilage has been eaten away,
73
00:08:22.079 --> 00:08:26.160
twisted spines, crooked tails, and
a darkening of the skin from the vent
74
00:08:26.439 --> 00:08:31.360
to the tail. Due to nerve
compression. The rate of breathing will be
75
00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:39.519
increased. Mortality is very high among
fry. This disease makes these fish more
76
00:08:39.639 --> 00:08:46.120
vulnerable to predation, and as the
disease progresses, they can no longer find
77
00:08:46.200 --> 00:08:50.480
food, causing many of them to
die of malnutrition. There is no known
78
00:08:50.600 --> 00:08:56.960
cure for whirling disease, but research
is ongoing. The modes of transmission for
79
00:08:58.039 --> 00:09:03.279
whirling disease are contact within effected animals, the sledge worm, contaminated equipment,
80
00:09:03.399 --> 00:09:09.759
and contaminated water. Keeping this in
mind, there are things that we can
81
00:09:09.799 --> 00:09:13.879
all do to help stop the spread
of whirling disease. The best method is
82
00:09:13.879 --> 00:09:20.360
to control the tube effects worm.
Many states that are considered hotspots are working
83
00:09:20.440 --> 00:09:24.639
on eliminating the worm that carries the
parasite and this would be the most effective
84
00:09:24.679 --> 00:09:31.200
mode of control. The problem with
the elimination of the tube effects worm is
85
00:09:31.240 --> 00:09:35.600
that it can involve chemicals that are
also toxic to fish and other aquatic life.
86
00:09:37.519 --> 00:09:41.679
Copper sulfate, formulin, and malachite
green have all been considered, but
87
00:09:41.840 --> 00:09:48.559
this is considered a last resort.
The starvation method can also be used,
88
00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:52.720
but this involves draining the waterway and
allowing it to dry out until the worms
89
00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:58.480
die. This is also impractical since
it would have negative effects on the aquatic
90
00:09:58.519 --> 00:10:05.320
wildlife living in those streams and ponds. Of course, quarantining fish stock before
91
00:10:05.360 --> 00:10:09.080
transfer as a must. If any
fish are exhibiting symptoms of whirling disease,
92
00:10:09.240 --> 00:10:15.360
they should not be used to stock
ponds. Fishermen, boaters, and anyone
93
00:10:15.399 --> 00:10:18.919
else who enjoys a day at the
lake can take some simple precautions to help
94
00:10:20.039 --> 00:10:26.080
stop the spread of whirling disease.
Remember to rinse any mud or debris from
95
00:10:26.120 --> 00:10:31.960
your equipment. Dispose of any unused
bait in the trash or on land rather
96
00:10:31.080 --> 00:10:39.200
than in the water. Tube effects
worms can't survive without water. Never transfer
97
00:10:39.360 --> 00:10:43.960
live fish from one body of water
to another. Don't use trout, salmon
98
00:10:45.039 --> 00:10:50.399
parts, or mullusk as, cut
bait, and never discard fish and trails
99
00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:54.919
or skeletal parts in a body of
water. I'll be doing a season on
100
00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:58.919
parasites eventually. There's a lot to
talk about with them. Even if their
101
00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:03.320
etiology is is pretty simple. It's
important to remember that m cerebrallas does not
102
00:11:03.480 --> 00:11:09.919
affect people. I won't encourage anyone
to eat any raw meat because there are
103
00:11:09.080 --> 00:11:15.200
other things that are human pathogens,
but not this one. Feel free to
104
00:11:15.240 --> 00:11:20.200
catch and eat any trout or salmon. It's good for you. We're going
105
00:11:20.240 --> 00:11:24.240
to take a quick break to hear
from our sponsors, then I'll be back
106
00:11:24.279 --> 00:11:28.080
to talk about the history of m. Cerebrallas. Did you know that planting
107
00:11:28.159 --> 00:11:35.360
cover crops in fall will help replenish
the soil for spring. Cover crops add
108
00:11:35.480 --> 00:11:41.080
organic biomass, keep the soil bacteria
healthy, add nitrogen and other nutrients so
109
00:11:41.120 --> 00:11:46.080
that when spring comes around, you're
ready to plant vegetables and fruits and the
110
00:11:46.200 --> 00:11:52.440
soil is ready to support them.
Cover crops also attract pollinators to your gardens.
111
00:11:54.120 --> 00:11:58.399
I've talked a lot about how important
bats are, but you also want
112
00:11:58.440 --> 00:12:05.080
to attract bees. But are flies
and other beneficial insects. Amphibians are struggling
113
00:12:05.080 --> 00:12:09.919
with fungal disease, and planting cover
crops may also give them a safe place
114
00:12:09.919 --> 00:12:16.720
to hibernate for the winter. Cover
crops improve soil structure and prevent erosion.
115
00:12:16.399 --> 00:12:22.799
Whether you're planting backyard gardens, containers, or raised beds, cover crops will
116
00:12:22.879 --> 00:12:28.080
keep your soil healthy. It costs
less than twenty five dollars for most backyard
117
00:12:28.159 --> 00:12:33.440
gardens, and the improvement in next
year's harvests will save even more money.
118
00:12:33.639 --> 00:12:39.080
Trueleaf Market has been the choice for
over one million growers for heirloom and organic
119
00:12:39.159 --> 00:12:46.519

128
00:13:41.600 --> 00:13:46.840
The first report of whirling disease came
out of Germany in the late eighteen seventies.
129
00:13:48.600 --> 00:13:52.559
It was seen in rainbow trout and
brook trout. Some stories say that
130
00:13:52.600 --> 00:13:56.960
the eggs had been imported from the
United States into Germany so that they could
131
00:13:56.960 --> 00:14:03.759
supplement the culture of the native trout, but that is not confirmed as there
132
00:14:03.759 --> 00:14:11.799
were never any reports of M.
Cerebrallus in the United States before Germany started
133
00:14:11.840 --> 00:14:16.759
reporting it. The disease killed most
of the fish in the fish farms where
134
00:14:16.759 --> 00:14:22.759
it was found. Bruno Hoefer was
the first to find the parasite. He
135
00:14:22.840 --> 00:14:26.799
was very active in the field of
fish parasitology and pathology. He was known
136
00:14:26.879 --> 00:14:33.000
for his work in environmental protection.
He wrote over two hundred papers addressing the
137
00:14:33.039 --> 00:14:41.919
importance of clean water. He also
wrote several papers on Mixabolis cerebrallus. The
138
00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:48.759
original report described a mixosporidian of trout
that infected the brain. Hence the parasite
139
00:14:48.840 --> 00:14:56.480
was called Mixabolis cerebrallus. When Marianne
Plan came along in nineteen o four,
140
00:14:56.840 --> 00:15:01.039
she noticed that this was a parasite
that tacked the skeletal tissue, and she
141
00:15:01.200 --> 00:15:07.960
proposed changing the name to Mixabolis chandraphagis. The change was not accepted by the
142
00:15:09.039 --> 00:15:13.600
scientific community at the time because it
didn't follow the rules of zoological nomenclature,
143
00:15:15.519 --> 00:15:24.200
so the name Lentosporas cerebralis was introduced. This genus described something similar to Mixabolis,
144
00:15:24.440 --> 00:15:30.200
but that particular genus didn't have a
vacule within the spore. Plan was
145
00:15:30.240 --> 00:15:33.080
the first to give a detailed description
of the disease in nineteen oh five.
146
00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:39.320
She described the initial stages of infection
and the erosion of the cartilage. She
147
00:15:39.480 --> 00:15:46.080
also found the large lesions that contained
parasites and the debris from cartilage degradation.
148
00:15:46.279 --> 00:15:52.519
She speculated that since the cartilanogis region
around the auditory capsule was invaded, either
149
00:15:52.559 --> 00:15:58.720
the toxins were released by the parasite
or the destruction of the capsule was causing
150
00:15:58.759 --> 00:16:04.000
the fish to have war equilibrium.
This is what was causing them to whorl.
151
00:16:04.480 --> 00:16:11.159
The weakening of the vertebral column posterior
to the twenty sixth vertebra was thought
152
00:16:11.240 --> 00:16:17.600
to exert pressure on the caudal nerves. This disrupted the melanin and caused the
153
00:16:17.639 --> 00:16:25.440
black tail. Cranial deformities such as
sunken eyes and a predominantly open or twisted
154
00:16:25.519 --> 00:16:30.120
lower jaw were chalked up to the
loss of cartilage during bone formation. She
155
00:16:30.279 --> 00:16:37.279
noticed that fish that made it to
their second year developed epithelioid granulomas, resulting
156
00:16:37.320 --> 00:16:42.480
in secondary damage to the fish.
She surmised that when the cartilage ossified,
157
00:16:42.919 --> 00:16:49.879
the spores became encapsulated, and this
would stop the occurrence of new infections.
158
00:16:49.919 --> 00:16:56.720
She believed that the fish acquired the
disease by ingesting the spores. She also
159
00:16:56.799 --> 00:17:02.279
did experiments on the spores themselves,
exposed them to drying and freezing, and
160
00:17:02.320 --> 00:17:06.720
found that the spores had an ability
to survive for long periods of time in
161
00:17:06.799 --> 00:17:12.799
harsh environments before finding a viable host. This led her to believe that the
162
00:17:12.880 --> 00:17:19.720
eradication of spores would be almost impossible. At this time, the Germans didn't
163
00:17:19.720 --> 00:17:26.319
know where the disease came from,
but it was devastating fisheries. In nineteen
164
00:17:26.400 --> 00:17:32.240
twenty two, speculation arose that the
disease had come from feeding rainbow trout raw
165
00:17:32.440 --> 00:17:40.319
cod, but this was unlikely.
Whirling disease exhibits symptoms that mimic other diseases
166
00:17:40.319 --> 00:17:45.599
of fish. This meant that researchers
had to accurately identify the disease before they
167
00:17:45.599 --> 00:17:52.359
could really figure out what caused it. Diagnostic methods were limited to observing the
168
00:17:52.440 --> 00:17:59.400
symptoms and fish that were aged zero
plus in fish that had passed their first
169
00:17:59.440 --> 00:18:03.880
winter and were longer than ten centimeters. The spores could be found in histological
170
00:18:03.960 --> 00:18:11.200
samples, and this was done by
dissecting the vestibular organ. Wilhelm's shaper Claus
171
00:18:11.400 --> 00:18:18.079
noticed that the disease was spreading across
Europe by fish breeders. He accused the
172
00:18:18.119 --> 00:18:23.119
breeders of hiding fish that were exhibiting
symptoms from buyers and essentially lying about the
173
00:18:23.200 --> 00:18:26.640
health of the fish that they were
selling for transport to other parts of the
174
00:18:26.720 --> 00:18:33.599
continent. By nineteen thirty one,
when Shaperclaus was observing the spread of infected
175
00:18:33.640 --> 00:18:41.640
fish, whirling disease was well established
and it was decimating fish populations. Trout
176
00:18:41.720 --> 00:18:48.519
production was failing and severe losses were
occurring. Shaperclass noticed four classes of disease
177
00:18:48.599 --> 00:18:55.319
symptoms, the whirling movements caused by
impairment of the vestibular apparatus, premature death
178
00:18:55.359 --> 00:19:00.279
without significant signs other than weight loss, chronic disease with darkening of the tail
179
00:19:00.440 --> 00:19:07.200
caused by damage to the sympathetic nerves, and chronic infection without external signs.
180
00:19:07.519 --> 00:19:14.440
The fourth condition was particularly worrisome since
fish that weren't exhibiting any symptoms could be
181
00:19:14.519 --> 00:19:18.839
transported and the breeder would be none
the wiser. These were the fish that
182
00:19:18.880 --> 00:19:25.640
were the primary cause of the spread. Shaper Class was the guy that shot
183
00:19:25.680 --> 00:19:29.920
down the theory that the disease was
spread by feeding saltwater fish to trout.
184
00:19:30.039 --> 00:19:34.920
He had seen that hatcheries all over
Europe were affected, whether they fed cod
185
00:19:36.000 --> 00:19:41.960
to their fish or not. He
thought that contact between infected fish was the
186
00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:47.160
culprit, and he was right,
but he mistakenly thought that the brown trout
187
00:19:47.200 --> 00:19:52.680
were the carriers, not the rainbows. He thought that the brown trout were
188
00:19:52.759 --> 00:19:59.920
probably carriers since they didn't exhibit symptoms
like the rainbow trout did. Reports began
189
00:20:00.119 --> 00:20:06.960
to come in about infected eggs being
transported between facilities. Shaperclass thought the explanation
190
00:20:07.039 --> 00:20:11.599
for this was that the eggs were
coming into contact with shipping materials that were
191
00:20:11.680 --> 00:20:17.920
transporting the disease. He thought that
the pathogen was adhering to the egg's surface.
192
00:20:18.799 --> 00:20:23.200
His observations gave rise to a few
guidelines for breeders. The fish were
193
00:20:23.240 --> 00:20:29.400
to be incubated in well water,
and all equipment was to be disinfected before
194
00:20:29.440 --> 00:20:36.440
transport so the eggs couldn't come into
contact with any infected fomites. Snails lived
195
00:20:36.440 --> 00:20:41.319
in many of the infected ponds where
the disease was prevalent, so shaperclass began
196
00:20:41.480 --> 00:20:45.039
to study them to see if they
were the cause of the disease. He
197
00:20:45.160 --> 00:20:51.799
examined several snail species in ponds where
whirling disease was prevalent and found that they
198
00:20:51.799 --> 00:20:56.559
were not the carriers. Had he
kept going and studied more invertebrates, he
199
00:20:56.799 --> 00:21:03.359
may have landed on two effects to
effects as the carrier, but he quit
200
00:21:03.480 --> 00:21:08.000
too soon. He further suggested that
breeders set low flow rates to avoid stirring
201
00:21:08.039 --> 00:21:15.400
up sediment and limiting the availability of
spores. He also suggested that breeding and
202
00:21:15.519 --> 00:21:22.079
rearing ponds should be separated. When
this didn't work, he suggested disinfecting unused
203
00:21:22.119 --> 00:21:26.720
ponds with caustic lime and calcium cyanimide, removing mud from the bottom of the
204
00:21:26.759 --> 00:21:33.079
pond and throwing away the sickest of
the fish. Scientists are prideful people,
205
00:21:33.559 --> 00:21:40.200
and there's nothing more exciting than naming
a disease. This was still a subject
206
00:21:40.200 --> 00:21:44.240
of a debate in nineteen thirty three, when the name was changed again to
207
00:21:44.480 --> 00:21:52.000
Mixosoma cerebrallus. The Mixosoma spores were
differentiated from the Mixobola spores by their lack
208
00:21:52.079 --> 00:22:00.759
of an iadiphorest vacuule. Between nineteen
fifty two and nineteen seventy the disease had
209
00:22:00.759 --> 00:22:07.319
come full circle. After becoming endemic
in several regions of the USSR and making
210
00:22:07.359 --> 00:22:12.680
its way from Czechoslovakia to Scotland,
it landed in the US. By nineteen
211
00:22:12.720 --> 00:22:19.799
sixty eight, seven states were reporting
whirling disease. In nineteen seventy one,
212
00:22:19.880 --> 00:22:26.079
the disease was reported in New Zealand. These reports included symptoms of violent whirling
213
00:22:26.119 --> 00:22:33.160
motion accompanied by heavy mortality. The
fishery where it was detected had been experiencing
214
00:22:33.200 --> 00:22:37.319
the disease since nineteen fifty five,
off and on, but they didn't make
215
00:22:37.319 --> 00:22:45.079
a report on it for twenty years. Upon examination, spores resembling M.
216
00:22:45.160 --> 00:22:52.759
Cerebrallus were isolated from the vertebrae of
rainbow trout at the fishery. Further examination
217
00:22:52.839 --> 00:22:56.440
on preserved samples showed that the disease
had been present for at least five years
218
00:22:56.559 --> 00:23:03.519
before the report was made. At
that time, any fish that were imported
219
00:23:03.559 --> 00:23:07.880
into New Zealand were supposed to be
heat treated to keep the disease from entering
220
00:23:07.920 --> 00:23:11.319
the country, but it was too
late. It had been there since at
221
00:23:11.400 --> 00:23:18.160
least nineteen fifty five, and possibly
since nineteen fifty two. Let me stop
222
00:23:18.160 --> 00:23:22.960
the story here for just a minute. I want you all to see this
223
00:23:22.079 --> 00:23:29.200
trend. This disease could have been
stopped in the nineteen thirties. It could
224
00:23:29.200 --> 00:23:33.759
have been contained and wiped out if
only the fish had been destroyed and the
225
00:23:33.839 --> 00:23:37.799
ponds had been cleaned. The ponds
didn't have to be cleaned with any harsh
226
00:23:37.880 --> 00:23:44.039
chemicals that would be detrimental to other
wildlife either. All that needed to be
227
00:23:44.119 --> 00:23:48.400
done was let them dry out completely, so the worm couldn't live and proliferate.
228
00:23:49.319 --> 00:23:56.279
Ignorance is bliss unless you're a rainbow
trout. In the US, hatcheries
229
00:23:56.319 --> 00:24:02.119
were stocking ponds with trout that had
been infected for the spread of whirling disease.
230
00:24:03.400 --> 00:24:07.519
In California, between nineteen sixty five
and nineteen eighty five, four commercial
231
00:24:07.559 --> 00:24:14.279
growers, one state fish chattery,
and one federal fish hatchery had fish that
232
00:24:14.400 --> 00:24:19.400
had been diagnosed with whirling disease.
Prior to nineteen eighty four, any fish
233
00:24:19.480 --> 00:24:26.079
that had been diagnosed with the disease
were destroyed. Control measures had been taking
234
00:24:26.119 --> 00:24:33.200
place in Europe beginning in nineteen seventy. The International Office of Epizootics included whirling
235
00:24:33.279 --> 00:24:40.240
disease in the International Zoo Sanitary Code, but further legislation by the government was
236
00:24:40.440 --> 00:24:45.119
quashed for fear that the US government
would close US markets to any country that
237
00:24:45.240 --> 00:24:52.480
couldn't guarantee that they were transporting fish
that were disease free. And still no
238
00:24:52.519 --> 00:24:56.720
one was sure what was causing the
disease. They knew it was a parasite,
239
00:24:56.960 --> 00:25:00.920
but they didn't know what the reservoir
was. It was assumed that it
240
00:25:02.000 --> 00:25:06.359
was being transmitted vertically, but that
didn't seem to be the cause, because
241
00:25:06.400 --> 00:25:11.680
when eggs were removed from infected waters, the fry wouldn't exhibit symptoms of the
242
00:25:11.799 --> 00:25:15.839
disease. It was also rightly assumed
that the fish were giving it to one
243
00:25:15.839 --> 00:25:21.640
another on contact, but that wasn't
much help. With no original reservoir,
244
00:25:22.279 --> 00:25:27.400
they needed to find the intermediate host. In nineteen eighty four, Lam and
245
00:25:27.519 --> 00:25:33.400
Noble changed the name of the pathogen. Again. It all had to do
246
00:25:33.519 --> 00:25:40.920
with that Iadophorus vacuole. The researchers
noticed that the vacuol wasn't always present in
247
00:25:40.960 --> 00:25:47.480
the specimens. This led them to
the belief that the original name Mixabolus cerebrallus
248
00:25:47.720 --> 00:25:52.839
was correct. That same year,
Wolf and Mark discovered a species of triactinal
249
00:25:53.000 --> 00:26:02.240
Mixon that was alternating life stages with
M. Cerebrallus, one stage undergoing development
250
00:26:02.359 --> 00:26:07.759
in an aquatic worm and the other
in the fish. They had finally found
251
00:26:07.759 --> 00:26:14.119
the intermediate host tube effects. Tube
effects the worm was required to complete the
252
00:26:14.160 --> 00:26:19.440
life cycle of the parasite. Without
the intermediate the parasite couldn't proliferate in the
253
00:26:19.599 --> 00:26:26.720
fish. Concrete raceways had replaced earthen
ponds in many hatchrees with some success.
254
00:26:27.319 --> 00:26:33.079
However, in those countries still using
earthen ponds, the parasite could live in
255
00:26:33.079 --> 00:26:37.160
the worm for several years. When
fish were reintroduced to the ponds, the
256
00:26:37.279 --> 00:26:44.160
life cycle started all over again,
as did whirling disease. An earthen pond
257
00:26:44.240 --> 00:26:48.400
had been free of fish for almost
thirty years. When fish were reintroduced,
258
00:26:48.079 --> 00:26:55.359
the fish got infected and most of
them died. Many of these earthen ponds
259
00:26:55.440 --> 00:27:00.160
were being fed from streams where wild
populations lived. As the water washed through
260
00:27:00.200 --> 00:27:04.240
the ponds, it brought tube effects
tube effects with it, and the wild
261
00:27:04.319 --> 00:27:11.240
populations were soon infected. Gaining an
understanding of the parasite hasn't done much to
262
00:27:11.279 --> 00:27:17.920
help prevent the disease from spreading.
Today, twenty five states report cases of
263
00:27:17.960 --> 00:27:22.880
whirling disease in wild trout. The
mortality rate in the wild is unknown.
264
00:27:23.759 --> 00:27:29.000
When it comes to diseases that affect
wild populations, it's always a guess.
265
00:27:30.160 --> 00:27:37.119
In fisheries, mortality rates vary anywhere
from twenty five to ninety percent. This
266
00:27:37.240 --> 00:27:41.279
disease is not going to wear itself
out, but many government agencies are acting
267
00:27:41.359 --> 00:27:47.799
like it will. In nineteen ninety
three, Mixabolus cerebrallus was taken off the
268
00:27:47.839 --> 00:27:55.559
list of injurious pathogens. The US
government isn't regulating the transport of the diseased
269
00:27:55.599 --> 00:28:00.480
fish either. I guess maybe the
government has bigger fish to fry, but
270
00:28:00.599 --> 00:28:06.160
if they allow this parasite to continue
killing off our native fish, we may
271
00:28:06.200 --> 00:28:11.680
not have any fish to fry.

00:29:19.440 --> 00:29:23.680
you all kinds of information about a
disease that you may or may not have,
286
00:29:25.319 --> 00:29:30.920
but I can't diagnose, prescribe,
or even advise. The only advice
287
00:29:30.960 --> 00:29:38.920
that I'll give you is to go
see your doctor. On the brighter side,
288
00:29:40.039 --> 00:29:45.599
I've hit fifteen thousand downloads. That's
a big deal. I never thought
289
00:29:45.680 --> 00:29:48.759
this podcast would attract as many listeners
as it does, and I want to
290
00:29:48.799 --> 00:29:55.759
thank everyone for coming back and passing
the word. Don't forget that. My
291
00:29:55.880 --> 00:30:00.000
daughter and I are starting a new
show in October. It's called Diving into
292
00:30:00.119 --> 00:30:06.640
Unsolved History. We're going to be
talking about historical mysteries and some of the
293
00:30:06.640 --> 00:30:11.640
theories that surround them. We may
even talk about a few that have been
294
00:30:11.000 --> 00:30:18.319
solved. It's going to be a
fun look at mysterious deaths, disappearances,
295
00:30:18.559 --> 00:30:22.119
and buried treasure. If you find
any of that treasure, though, you
296
00:30:22.240 --> 00:30:27.000
have to share it with us.
Thanks again for listening, and I'll see
297
00:30:27.039 --> 00:30:32.319
you in two weeks For the final
episode for this season, Who's Who Outside
298
00:30:32.319 --> 00:30:37.960
of the Zoo will be ending this
season with a look at how man drives
299
00:30:37.119 --> 00:31:03.559
animals to extinction. Until then,
don't watch the Whirling Fish they'll make you dizzy.

entertain you Darkcast Network. Come on
over to the dark Side. We're really
22
00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:24.800
nice people once you get past the
true crime and scary science. Hello and
23
00:02:24.879 --> 00:02:30.039
welcome to Cause of Death. One
hundred seconds to midnight. I'm your host,
24
00:02:30.319 --> 00:02:38.080
Jackie Morante. In the last fifty
years, more than four thousand animals
25
00:02:38.120 --> 00:02:44.840
have become extinct, from invertebrates to
mammals. We've lost four thousand species that
26
00:02:44.960 --> 00:02:51.360
are vital to their habitats. It's
ninety seconds to midnight, and our wild
27
00:02:51.360 --> 00:02:58.960
life suffers under the heavy burden of
human encroachment. From logging to oil drilling,
28
00:02:59.439 --> 00:03:05.039
over to development of wild lands to
water diversion. Animals are disappearing,
29
00:03:05.639 --> 00:03:43.560
never to be seen again. Hello
and welcome to Cause of Death. One
30
00:03:43.680 --> 00:03:50.080
hundred seconds to midnight. I'm your
host, Jackie Moranti. I changed my
31
00:03:50.120 --> 00:03:54.439
mind mid script. I decided that
I needed to finish this season with a
32
00:03:54.599 --> 00:04:00.199
one hundred seconds to midnight episode on
extinction. I thought that would be more
33
00:04:00.199 --> 00:04:05.879
appropriate. So this week I'm going
to talk about the last disease in this
34
00:04:05.960 --> 00:04:14.319
season. We're going to look at
whirling disease in fish. Let's begin with
35
00:04:14.479 --> 00:04:24.560
ideology and pathology. This will be
a new pathogen for us. Mixobolus cerebrallus
36
00:04:24.680 --> 00:04:30.639
is a mixozoan parasite. Whirling disease
is caused by the actinosporean spores of the
37
00:04:30.720 --> 00:04:39.160
parasite. This parasite has a complex
two host life cycle. The parasite alternates
38
00:04:39.199 --> 00:04:46.399
between the sledge worm tube effects tube
effects and the salmonid host. The Triactino
39
00:04:46.560 --> 00:04:53.120
Mixon spores are water born and when
they are released from the infected sledge worms,
40
00:04:53.319 --> 00:04:58.959
they attach to the salmonid host by
a polar filament extrusion brought on by
41
00:04:59.040 --> 00:05:08.319
nucleoside and thigamotropy stimuli. This is
rapidly followed by active penetration of the sporoplasms
42
00:05:08.399 --> 00:05:15.680
into the fish epidermis. Once the
parasites are in the sporoplasms multiply and travel
43
00:05:15.720 --> 00:05:20.240
along the peripheral nerves and the central
nervous system to reach the cartilage, where
44
00:05:20.279 --> 00:05:28.360
they form trophosites, which continue to
multiply and produce more spores. M.
45
00:05:28.439 --> 00:05:34.040
Celebrellus mixospores are released into the environment
when infected fish stye or when they are
46
00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:41.959
consumed and excreted by predators. Mixospores
that are released into the water are ingested
47
00:05:42.000 --> 00:05:46.560
by t tube effects, where they
develop intercellularly in the intestine over a period
48
00:05:46.639 --> 00:05:53.759
of about three months. They go
through four developmental stages inside of the worm,
49
00:05:54.160 --> 00:06:00.560
then they mature as actinospores. The
salmonids then ingest the worms, and
50
00:06:00.639 --> 00:06:04.680
the parasite cycle begins all over again
with a new host. That is pretty
51
00:06:04.759 --> 00:06:12.160
much the life cycle of M.
Cerebrallas. Most parasites will begin as larvae
52
00:06:12.199 --> 00:06:15.560
in the environment, then they'll move
to an intermediate host, then to their
53
00:06:15.600 --> 00:06:21.519
final host. Let's talk about salmon. It's for a minute. Salmon Idia
54
00:06:21.959 --> 00:06:28.879
is a family of elongated bony fish. The last three vertebrae of these fish
55
00:06:28.920 --> 00:06:34.240
are upturned. The fish that are
specifically affected by M. Cerebrallas are salmon
56
00:06:34.399 --> 00:06:40.959
and trout. The main species of
fish that are infected are rainbow trout.
57
00:06:42.399 --> 00:06:46.079
I'm going to make a quick mention
that rainbow trout are considered an endangered species
58
00:06:46.120 --> 00:06:51.240
in some areas of North America.
They've not only been threatened by whirling disease,
59
00:06:51.560 --> 00:06:58.000
but pollution and invasive species taking over
their spawning grounds has also caused a
60
00:06:58.160 --> 00:07:02.079
decline in populations. I promise that
while I'm on my break, I'll be
61
00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:09.720
releasing the house that Jack built.
That episode is all about how invasive species
62
00:07:09.759 --> 00:07:15.759
are threatening native species across the world. In the next episode on Extinction,
63
00:07:15.040 --> 00:07:23.399
I'll be talking about how pollution affects
wildlife. They're both really important topics.
64
00:07:24.279 --> 00:07:29.319
Whirling disease has become a serious threat
to salmond species, and it's just about
65
00:07:29.399 --> 00:07:34.959
impossible to control. The pathogenicity of
the parasite is due to the host immune
66
00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:41.560
response. The parasite evades the immune
system of the salmonid, and this allows
67
00:07:41.800 --> 00:07:46.639
m cebralus to proliferate within the host
during the first stages of infection. The
68
00:07:46.720 --> 00:07:54.240
lack of an appropriate regulatory response from
the immune system results in an excessive inflammatory
69
00:07:54.279 --> 00:08:01.720
response. With special focus on T
and B lymphosite and immunoglobular responses. The
70
00:08:01.839 --> 00:08:07.959
parasite attacks the cartilage of the head
and spine. Symptoms increase as the parasite
71
00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:16.000
invades the nervous system. Fish infested
with the parasite may exhibit a whirling behavior,
72
00:08:16.319 --> 00:08:20.360
head deformities including a sloped head where
the cartilage has been eaten away,
73
00:08:22.079 --> 00:08:26.160
twisted spines, crooked tails, and
a darkening of the skin from the vent
74
00:08:26.439 --> 00:08:31.360
to the tail. Due to nerve
compression. The rate of breathing will be
75
00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:39.519
increased. Mortality is very high among
fry. This disease makes these fish more
76
00:08:39.639 --> 00:08:46.120
vulnerable to predation, and as the
disease progresses, they can no longer find
77
00:08:46.200 --> 00:08:50.480
food, causing many of them to
die of malnutrition. There is no known
78
00:08:50.600 --> 00:08:56.960
cure for whirling disease, but research
is ongoing. The modes of transmission for
79
00:08:58.039 --> 00:09:03.279
whirling disease are contact within effected animals, the sledge worm, contaminated equipment,
80
00:09:03.399 --> 00:09:09.759
and contaminated water. Keeping this in
mind, there are things that we can
81
00:09:09.799 --> 00:09:13.879
all do to help stop the spread
of whirling disease. The best method is
82
00:09:13.879 --> 00:09:20.360
to control the tube effects worm.
Many states that are considered hotspots are working
83
00:09:20.440 --> 00:09:24.639
on eliminating the worm that carries the
parasite and this would be the most effective
84
00:09:24.679 --> 00:09:31.200
mode of control. The problem with
the elimination of the tube effects worm is
85
00:09:31.240 --> 00:09:35.600
that it can involve chemicals that are
also toxic to fish and other aquatic life.
86
00:09:37.519 --> 00:09:41.679
Copper sulfate, formulin, and malachite
green have all been considered, but
87
00:09:41.840 --> 00:09:48.559
this is considered a last resort.
The starvation method can also be used,
88
00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:52.720
but this involves draining the waterway and
allowing it to dry out until the worms
89
00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:58.480
die. This is also impractical since
it would have negative effects on the aquatic
90
00:09:58.519 --> 00:10:05.320
wildlife living in those streams and ponds. Of course, quarantining fish stock before
91
00:10:05.360 --> 00:10:09.080
transfer as a must. If any
fish are exhibiting symptoms of whirling disease,
92
00:10:09.240 --> 00:10:15.360
they should not be used to stock
ponds. Fishermen, boaters, and anyone
93
00:10:15.399 --> 00:10:18.919
else who enjoys a day at the
lake can take some simple precautions to help
94
00:10:20.039 --> 00:10:26.080
stop the spread of whirling disease.
Remember to rinse any mud or debris from
95
00:10:26.120 --> 00:10:31.960
your equipment. Dispose of any unused
bait in the trash or on land rather
96
00:10:31.080 --> 00:10:39.200
than in the water. Tube effects
worms can't survive without water. Never transfer
97
00:10:39.360 --> 00:10:43.960
live fish from one body of water
to another. Don't use trout, salmon
98
00:10:45.039 --> 00:10:50.399
parts, or mullusk as, cut
bait, and never discard fish and trails
99
00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:54.919
or skeletal parts in a body of
water. I'll be doing a season on
100
00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:58.919
parasites eventually. There's a lot to
talk about with them. Even if their
101
00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:03.320
etiology is is pretty simple. It's
important to remember that m cerebrallas does not
102
00:11:03.480 --> 00:11:09.919
affect people. I won't encourage anyone
to eat any raw meat because there are
103
00:11:09.080 --> 00:11:15.200
other things that are human pathogens,
but not this one. Feel free to
104
00:11:15.240 --> 00:11:20.200
catch and eat any trout or salmon. It's good for you. We're going
105
00:11:20.240 --> 00:11:24.240
to take a quick break to hear
from our sponsors, then I'll be back
106
00:11:24.279 --> 00:11:28.080
to talk about the history of m. Cerebrallas. Did you know that planting
107
00:11:28.159 --> 00:11:35.360
cover crops in fall will help replenish
the soil for spring. Cover crops add
108
00:11:35.480 --> 00:11:41.080
organic biomass, keep the soil bacteria
healthy, add nitrogen and other nutrients so
109
00:11:41.120 --> 00:11:46.080
that when spring comes around, you're
ready to plant vegetables and fruits and the
110
00:11:46.200 --> 00:11:52.440
soil is ready to support them.
Cover crops also attract pollinators to your gardens.
111
00:11:54.120 --> 00:11:58.399
I've talked a lot about how important
bats are, but you also want
112
00:11:58.440 --> 00:12:05.080
to attract bees. But are flies
and other beneficial insects. Amphibians are struggling
113
00:12:05.080 --> 00:12:09.919
with fungal disease, and planting cover
crops may also give them a safe place
114
00:12:09.919 --> 00:12:16.720
to hibernate for the winter. Cover
crops improve soil structure and prevent erosion.
115
00:12:16.399 --> 00:12:22.799
Whether you're planting backyard gardens, containers, or raised beds, cover crops will
116
00:12:22.879 --> 00:12:28.080
keep your soil healthy. It costs
less than twenty five dollars for most backyard
117
00:12:28.159 --> 00:12:33.440
gardens, and the improvement in next
year's harvests will save even more money.
118
00:12:33.639 --> 00:12:39.080

128
00:13:41.600 --> 00:13:46.840
The first report of whirling disease came
out of Germany in the late eighteen seventies.
129
00:13:48.600 --> 00:13:52.559
It was seen in rainbow trout and
brook trout. Some stories say that
130
00:13:52.600 --> 00:13:56.960
the eggs had been imported from the
United States into Germany so that they could
131
00:13:56.960 --> 00:14:03.759
supplement the culture of the native trout, but that is not confirmed as there
132
00:14:03.759 --> 00:14:11.799
were never any reports of M.
Cerebrallus in the United States before Germany started
133
00:14:11.840 --> 00:14:16.759
reporting it. The disease killed most
of the fish in the fish farms where
134
00:14:16.759 --> 00:14:22.759
it was found. Bruno Hoefer was
the first to find the parasite. He
135
00:14:22.840 --> 00:14:26.799
was very active in the field of
fish parasitology and pathology. He was known
136
00:14:26.879 --> 00:14:33.000
for his work in environmental protection.
He wrote over two hundred papers addressing the
137
00:14:33.039 --> 00:14:41.919
importance of clean water. He also
wrote several papers on Mixabolis cerebrallus. The
138
00:14:43.000 --> 00:14:48.759
original report described a mixosporidian of trout
that infected the brain. Hence the parasite
139
00:14:48.840 --> 00:14:56.480
was called Mixabolis cerebrallus. When Marianne
Plan came along in nineteen o four,
140
00:14:56.840 --> 00:15:01.039
she noticed that this was a parasite
that tacked the skeletal tissue, and she
141
00:15:01.200 --> 00:15:07.960
proposed changing the name to Mixabolis chandraphagis. The change was not accepted by the
142
00:15:09.039 --> 00:15:13.600
scientific community at the time because it
didn't follow the rules of zoological nomenclature,
143
00:15:15.519 --> 00:15:24.200
so the name Lentosporas cerebralis was introduced. This genus described something similar to Mixabolis,
144
00:15:24.440 --> 00:15:30.200
but that particular genus didn't have a
vacule within the spore. Plan was
145
00:15:30.240 --> 00:15:33.080
the first to give a detailed description
of the disease in nineteen oh five.
146
00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:39.320
She described the initial stages of infection
and the erosion of the cartilage. She
147
00:15:39.480 --> 00:15:46.080
also found the large lesions that contained
parasites and the debris from cartilage degradation.
148
00:15:46.279 --> 00:15:52.519
She speculated that since the cartilanogis region
around the auditory capsule was invaded, either
149
00:15:52.559 --> 00:15:58.720
the toxins were released by the parasite
or the destruction of the capsule was causing
150
00:15:58.759 --> 00:16:04.000
the fish to have war equilibrium.
This is what was causing them to whorl.
151
00:16:04.480 --> 00:16:11.159
The weakening of the vertebral column posterior
to the twenty sixth vertebra was thought
152
00:16:11.240 --> 00:16:17.600
to exert pressure on the caudal nerves. This disrupted the melanin and caused the
153
00:16:17.639 --> 00:16:25.440
black tail. Cranial deformities such as
sunken eyes and a predominantly open or twisted
154
00:16:25.519 --> 00:16:30.120
lower jaw were chalked up to the
loss of cartilage during bone formation. She
155
00:16:30.279 --> 00:16:37.279
noticed that fish that made it to
their second year developed epithelioid granulomas, resulting
156
00:16:37.320 --> 00:16:42.480
in secondary damage to the fish.
She surmised that when the cartilage ossified,
157
00:16:42.919 --> 00:16:49.879
the spores became encapsulated, and this
would stop the occurrence of new infections.
158
00:16:49.919 --> 00:16:56.720
She believed that the fish acquired the
disease by ingesting the spores. She also
159
00:16:56.799 --> 00:17:02.279
did experiments on the spores themselves,
exposed them to drying and freezing, and
160
00:17:02.320 --> 00:17:06.720
found that the spores had an ability
to survive for long periods of time in
161
00:17:06.799 --> 00:17:12.799
harsh environments before finding a viable host. This led her to believe that the
162
00:17:12.880 --> 00:17:19.720
eradication of spores would be almost impossible. At this time, the Germans didn't
163
00:17:19.720 --> 00:17:26.319
know where the disease came from,
but it was devastating fisheries. In nineteen
164
00:17:26.400 --> 00:17:32.240
twenty two, speculation arose that the
disease had come from feeding rainbow trout raw
165
00:17:32.440 --> 00:17:40.319
cod, but this was unlikely.
Whirling disease exhibits symptoms that mimic other diseases
166
00:17:40.319 --> 00:17:45.599
of fish. This meant that researchers
had to accurately identify the disease before they
167
00:17:45.599 --> 00:17:52.359
could really figure out what caused it. Diagnostic methods were limited to observing the
168
00:17:52.440 --> 00:17:59.400
symptoms and fish that were aged zero
plus in fish that had passed their first
169
00:17:59.440 --> 00:18:03.880
winter and were longer than ten centimeters. The spores could be found in histological
170
00:18:03.960 --> 00:18:11.200
samples, and this was done by
dissecting the vestibular organ. Wilhelm's shaper Claus
171
00:18:11.400 --> 00:18:18.079
noticed that the disease was spreading across
Europe by fish breeders. He accused the
172
00:18:18.119 --> 00:18:23.119
breeders of hiding fish that were exhibiting
symptoms from buyers and essentially lying about the
173
00:18:23.200 --> 00:18:26.640
health of the fish that they were
selling for transport to other parts of the
174
00:18:26.720 --> 00:18:33.599
continent. By nineteen thirty one,
when Shaperclaus was observing the spread of infected
175
00:18:33.640 --> 00:18:41.640
fish, whirling disease was well established
and it was decimating fish populations. Trout
176
00:18:41.720 --> 00:18:48.519
production was failing and severe losses were
occurring. Shaperclass noticed four classes of disease
177
00:18:48.599 --> 00:18:55.319
symptoms, the whirling movements caused by
impairment of the vestibular apparatus, premature death
178
00:18:55.359 --> 00:19:00.279
without significant signs other than weight loss, chronic disease with darkening of the tail
179
00:19:00.440 --> 00:19:07.200
caused by damage to the sympathetic nerves, and chronic infection without external signs.
180
00:19:07.519 --> 00:19:14.440
The fourth condition was particularly worrisome since
fish that weren't exhibiting any symptoms could be
181
00:19:14.519 --> 00:19:18.839
transported and the breeder would be none
the wiser. These were the fish that
182
00:19:18.880 --> 00:19:25.640
were the primary cause of the spread. Shaper Class was the guy that shot
183
00:19:25.680 --> 00:19:29.920
down the theory that the disease was
spread by feeding saltwater fish to trout.
184
00:19:30.039 --> 00:19:34.920
He had seen that hatcheries all over
Europe were affected, whether they fed cod
185
00:19:36.000 --> 00:19:41.960
to their fish or not. He
thought that contact between infected fish was the
186
00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:47.160
culprit, and he was right,
but he mistakenly thought that the brown trout
187
00:19:47.200 --> 00:19:52.680
were the carriers, not the rainbows. He thought that the brown trout were
188
00:19:52.759 --> 00:19:59.920
probably carriers since they didn't exhibit symptoms
like the rainbow trout did. Reports began
189
00:20:00.119 --> 00:20:06.960
to come in about infected eggs being
transported between facilities. Shaperclass thought the explanation
190
00:20:07.039 --> 00:20:11.599
for this was that the eggs were
coming into contact with shipping materials that were
191
00:20:11.680 --> 00:20:17.920
transporting the disease. He thought that
the pathogen was adhering to the egg's surface.
192
00:20:18.799 --> 00:20:23.200
His observations gave rise to a few
guidelines for breeders. The fish were
193
00:20:23.240 --> 00:20:29.400
to be incubated in well water,
and all equipment was to be disinfected before
194
00:20:29.440 --> 00:20:36.440
transport so the eggs couldn't come into
contact with any infected fomites. Snails lived
195
00:20:36.440 --> 00:20:41.319
in many of the infected ponds where
the disease was prevalent, so shaperclass began
196
00:20:41.480 --> 00:20:45.039
to study them to see if they
were the cause of the disease. He
197
00:20:45.160 --> 00:20:51.799
examined several snail species in ponds where
whirling disease was prevalent and found that they
198
00:20:51.799 --> 00:20:56.559
were not the carriers. Had he
kept going and studied more invertebrates, he
199
00:20:56.799 --> 00:21:03.359
may have landed on two effects to
effects as the carrier, but he quit
200
00:21:03.480 --> 00:21:08.000
too soon. He further suggested that
breeders set low flow rates to avoid stirring
201
00:21:08.039 --> 00:21:15.400
up sediment and limiting the availability of
spores. He also suggested that breeding and
202
00:21:15.519 --> 00:21:22.079
rearing ponds should be separated. When
this didn't work, he suggested disinfecting unused
203
00:21:22.119 --> 00:21:26.720
ponds with caustic lime and calcium cyanimide, removing mud from the bottom of the
204
00:21:26.759 --> 00:21:33.079
pond and throwing away the sickest of
the fish. Scientists are prideful people,
205
00:21:33.559 --> 00:21:40.200
and there's nothing more exciting than naming
a disease. This was still a subject
206
00:21:40.200 --> 00:21:44.240
of a debate in nineteen thirty three, when the name was changed again to
207
00:21:44.480 --> 00:21:52.000
Mixosoma cerebrallus. The Mixosoma spores were
differentiated from the Mixobola spores by their lack
208
00:21:52.079 --> 00:22:00.759
of an iadiphorest vacuule. Between nineteen
fifty two and nineteen seventy the disease had
209
00:22:00.759 --> 00:22:07.319
come full circle. After becoming endemic
in several regions of the USSR and making
210
00:22:07.359 --> 00:22:12.680
its way from Czechoslovakia to Scotland,
it landed in the US. By nineteen
211
00:22:12.720 --> 00:22:19.799
sixty eight, seven states were reporting
whirling disease. In nineteen seventy one,
212
00:22:19.880 --> 00:22:26.079
the disease was reported in New Zealand. These reports included symptoms of violent whirling
213
00:22:26.119 --> 00:22:33.160
motion accompanied by heavy mortality. The
fishery where it was detected had been experiencing
214
00:22:33.200 --> 00:22:37.319
the disease since nineteen fifty five,
off and on, but they didn't make
215
00:22:37.319 --> 00:22:45.079
a report on it for twenty years. Upon examination, spores resembling M.
216
00:22:45.160 --> 00:22:52.759
Cerebrallus were isolated from the vertebrae of
rainbow trout at the fishery. Further examination
217
00:22:52.839 --> 00:22:56.440
on preserved samples showed that the disease
had been present for at least five years
218
00:22:56.559 --> 00:23:03.519
before the report was made. At
that time, any fish that were imported
219
00:23:03.559 --> 00:23:07.880
into New Zealand were supposed to be
heat treated to keep the disease from entering
220
00:23:07.920 --> 00:23:11.319
the country, but it was too
late. It had been there since at
221
00:23:11.400 --> 00:23:18.160
least nineteen fifty five, and possibly
since nineteen fifty two. Let me stop
222
00:23:18.160 --> 00:23:22.960
the story here for just a minute. I want you all to see this
223
00:23:22.079 --> 00:23:29.200
trend. This disease could have been
stopped in the nineteen thirties. It could
224
00:23:29.200 --> 00:23:33.759
have been contained and wiped out if
only the fish had been destroyed and the
225
00:23:33.839 --> 00:23:37.799
ponds had been cleaned. The ponds
didn't have to be cleaned with any harsh
226
00:23:37.880 --> 00:23:44.039
chemicals that would be detrimental to other
wildlife either. All that needed to be
227
00:23:44.119 --> 00:23:48.400
done was let them dry out completely, so the worm couldn't live and proliferate.
228
00:23:49.319 --> 00:23:56.279
Ignorance is bliss unless you're a rainbow
trout. In the US, hatcheries
229
00:23:56.319 --> 00:24:02.119
were stocking ponds with trout that had
been infected for the spread of whirling disease.
230
00:24:03.400 --> 00:24:07.519
In California, between nineteen sixty five
and nineteen eighty five, four commercial
231
00:24:07.559 --> 00:24:14.279
growers, one state fish chattery,
and one federal fish hatchery had fish that
232
00:24:14.400 --> 00:24:19.400
had been diagnosed with whirling disease.
Prior to nineteen eighty four, any fish
233
00:24:19.480 --> 00:24:26.079
that had been diagnosed with the disease
were destroyed. Control measures had been taking
234
00:24:26.119 --> 00:24:33.200
place in Europe beginning in nineteen seventy. The International Office of Epizootics included whirling
235
00:24:33.279 --> 00:24:40.240
disease in the International Zoo Sanitary Code, but further legislation by the government was
236
00:24:40.440 --> 00:24:45.119
quashed for fear that the US government
would close US markets to any country that
237
00:24:45.240 --> 00:24:52.480
couldn't guarantee that they were transporting fish
that were disease free. And still no
238
00:24:52.519 --> 00:24:56.720
one was sure what was causing the
disease. They knew it was a parasite,
239
00:24:56.960 --> 00:25:00.920
but they didn't know what the reservoir
was. It was assumed that it
240
00:25:02.000 --> 00:25:06.359
was being transmitted vertically, but that
didn't seem to be the cause, because
241
00:25:06.400 --> 00:25:11.680
when eggs were removed from infected waters, the fry wouldn't exhibit symptoms of the
242
00:25:11.799 --> 00:25:15.839
disease. It was also rightly assumed
that the fish were giving it to one
243
00:25:15.839 --> 00:25:21.640
another on contact, but that wasn't
much help. With no original reservoir,
244
00:25:22.279 --> 00:25:27.400
they needed to find the intermediate host. In nineteen eighty four, Lam and
245
00:25:27.519 --> 00:25:33.400
Noble changed the name of the pathogen. Again. It all had to do
246
00:25:33.519 --> 00:25:40.920
with that Iadophorus vacuole. The researchers
noticed that the vacuol wasn't always present in
247
00:25:40.960 --> 00:25:47.480
the specimens. This led them to
the belief that the original name Mixabolus cerebrallus
248
00:25:47.720 --> 00:25:52.839
was correct. That same year,
Wolf and Mark discovered a species of triactinal
249
00:25:53.000 --> 00:26:02.240
Mixon that was alternating life stages with
M. Cerebrallus, one stage undergoing development
250
00:26:02.359 --> 00:26:07.759
in an aquatic worm and the other
in the fish. They had finally found
251
00:26:07.759 --> 00:26:14.119
the intermediate host tube effects. Tube
effects the worm was required to complete the
252
00:26:14.160 --> 00:26:19.440
life cycle of the parasite. Without
the intermediate the parasite couldn't proliferate in the
253
00:26:19.599 --> 00:26:26.720
fish. Concrete raceways had replaced earthen
ponds in many hatchrees with some success.
254
00:26:27.319 --> 00:26:33.079
However, in those countries still using
earthen ponds, the parasite could live in
255
00:26:33.079 --> 00:26:37.160
the worm for several years. When
fish were reintroduced to the ponds, the
256
00:26:37.279 --> 00:26:44.160
life cycle started all over again,
as did whirling disease. An earthen pond
257
00:26:44.240 --> 00:26:48.400
had been free of fish for almost
thirty years. When fish were reintroduced,
258
00:26:48.079 --> 00:26:55.359
the fish got infected and most of
them died. Many of these earthen ponds
259
00:26:55.440 --> 00:27:00.160
were being fed from streams where wild
populations lived. As the water washed through
260
00:27:00.200 --> 00:27:04.240
the ponds, it brought tube effects
tube effects with it, and the wild
261
00:27:04.319 --> 00:27:11.240
populations were soon infected. Gaining an
understanding of the parasite hasn't done much to
262
00:27:11.279 --> 00:27:17.920
help prevent the disease from spreading.
Today, twenty five states report cases of
263
00:27:17.960 --> 00:27:22.880
whirling disease in wild trout. The
mortality rate in the wild is unknown.
264
00:27:23.759 --> 00:27:29.000
When it comes to diseases that affect
wild populations, it's always a guess.
265
00:27:30.160 --> 00:27:37.119
In fisheries, mortality rates vary anywhere
from twenty five to ninety percent. This
266
00:27:37.240 --> 00:27:41.279
disease is not going to wear itself
out, but many government agencies are acting
267
00:27:41.359 --> 00:27:47.799
like it will. In nineteen ninety
three, Mixabolus cerebrallus was taken off the
268
00:27:47.839 --> 00:27:55.559
list of injurious pathogens. The US
government isn't regulating the transport of the diseased
269
00:27:55.599 --> 00:28:00.480
fish either. I guess maybe the
government has bigger fish to fry, but
270
00:28:00.599 --> 00:28:06.160
if they allow this parasite to continue
killing off our native fish, we may
271
00:28:06.200 --> 00:28:11.680
not have any fish to fry.

00:29:15.640 --> 00:29:19.440
that I'm not a medical doctor.
I'm a research scientist. I can give
285
00:29:19.440 --> 00:29:23.680
you all kinds of information about a
disease that you may or may not have,
286
00:29:25.319 --> 00:29:30.920
but I can't diagnose, prescribe,
or even advise. The only advice
287
00:29:30.960 --> 00:29:38.920
that I'll give you is to go
see your doctor. On the brighter side,
288
00:29:40.039 --> 00:29:45.599
I've hit fifteen thousand downloads. That's
a big deal. I never thought
289
00:29:45.680 --> 00:29:48.759
this podcast would attract as many listeners
as it does, and I want to
290
00:29:48.799 --> 00:29:55.759
thank everyone for coming back and passing
the word. Don't forget that. My
291
00:29:55.880 --> 00:30:00.000
daughter and I are starting a new
show in October. It's called Diving into
292
00:30:00.119 --> 00:30:06.640
Unsolved History. We're going to be
talking about historical mysteries and some of the
293
00:30:06.640 --> 00:30:11.640
theories that surround them. We may
even talk about a few that have been
294
00:30:11.000 --> 00:30:18.319
solved. It's going to be a
fun look at mysterious deaths, disappearances,
295
00:30:18.559 --> 00:30:22.119
and buried treasure. If you find
any of that treasure, though, you
296
00:30:22.240 --> 00:30:27.000
have to share it with us.
Thanks again for listening, and I'll see
297
00:30:27.039 --> 00:30:32.319
you in two weeks For the final
episode for this season, Who's Who Outside
298
00:30:32.319 --> 00:30:37.960
of the Zoo will be ending this
season with a look at how man drives
299
00:30:37.119 --> 00:31:03.559
animals to extinction. Until then,
don't watch the Whirling Fish they'll make you dizzy.
