You can reach me on the website at www.causeofdeath100secs.net or you can email me at Jackie@causeofdeath100secs.net. My Link Tree can be found at: https://linktr.ee/CauseofDeathpod Today, we’re going to talk about whipworm. I chose this particular parasite because my dog, Sweet Pea was diagnosed with it a few weeks ago despite having worm meds every month. We’ll begin this story, as usual, with etiology and pathology. Whipworm is a parasitic roundworm. Its scientific name is Trichuris trichiura, it’s phylum is Nematoda, Class Enoplea, Domain Eukaryota. It’s in the Family Trichuridae, Genus Trichuris and Kingdom Animalia. The body of the worm is shaped like a whip with a long, thick handle-like structure at one end, the anus, that tapers off to a thin whip-like structure at the other end. It’s this end that attaches to the cecum, but we’ll get to that. For those of you who love my dog, she’s a special guest on this episode. She’s talking about her experience with whipworm. And her birthday party. 28
00:02:13.599 --> 00:02:21.000
One hundred seconds to midnight. I'm
your host, Jackie Morante. This episode
29
00:02:21.120 --> 00:02:25.919
begins a new season of the podcast. The topic for this season is parasites.
30
00:02:27.639 --> 00:02:31.560
I call it Creepy Crawley's. There
may not be a whole lot of
31
00:02:31.680 --> 00:02:37.439
history in this season, but there
will be plenty of diseases that you don't
32
00:02:37.599 --> 00:02:43.159
really want. Today, we're going
to talk about whipworm. I chose this
33
00:02:43.199 --> 00:02:47.159
particular parasite because my dog's sweet pea
was diagnosed with it a few weeks ago,
34
00:02:47.680 --> 00:02:54.759
despite having worm meds every month.
We'll begin this story as usual with
35
00:02:55.159 --> 00:03:01.919
ediology and pathology. Worm infections are
often referred to as helminth infections, and
36
00:03:02.000 --> 00:03:10.639
I'll use both references. Whipworm is
a parasitic roundworm. Its scientific name is
37
00:03:10.759 --> 00:03:17.240
Tricurus tricuria. Its phylum is Nematoda. It's in the class of Anoplia.
38
00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:25.080
Its domain is Eukaryota. It's in
the family Tricyidae, genus Tricurus and kingdom
39
00:03:25.199 --> 00:03:30.039
Animalia. The body of the worm
is shaped like a whip, with a
40
00:03:30.120 --> 00:03:37.159
long, thick handle like structure at
one end, the anus that tapers off
41
00:03:37.199 --> 00:03:43.000
to a thin whip like structure at
the other end. It's this end that
42
00:03:43.120 --> 00:03:49.479
attaches to the sekum, but we'll
get to that. The disease that it
43
00:03:49.599 --> 00:03:54.639
causes in people is tricuriasis. The
size of these worms varies between three to
44
00:03:54.759 --> 00:04:00.400
five centimeters, and the female is
usually larger than the male. The female
45
00:04:00.599 --> 00:04:08.759
lays anywhere from two thousand to ten
thousand eggs per day. Think about that
46
00:04:08.840 --> 00:04:15.639
for a minute. These eggs are
generally left behind after an infected human defecates
47
00:04:15.680 --> 00:04:19.519
in the soil. If you've ever
wondered why I tell you to wash your
48
00:04:19.560 --> 00:04:26.279
fruits and vegetables before you eat them, well soon you will have your answer.
49
00:04:28.040 --> 00:04:31.120
The eggs mature in about fourteen to
twenty one days. This is when
50
00:04:31.160 --> 00:04:39.279
they enter the effective stage. If
someone ingests the ambryonated eggs, the eggs
51
00:04:39.319 --> 00:04:44.759
will hatch in the small intestine,
where they'll use the intestinal microflora and the
52
00:04:44.839 --> 00:04:50.199
nutrients in the digestive tract to mature
and grow. The majority of the larvae
53
00:04:50.240 --> 00:04:56.399
will move to the secum, where
they penetrate the mucosa and mature to adulthood.
54
00:04:57.360 --> 00:05:00.959
If a large worm burden is present, parts of the large intestine could
55
00:05:01.040 --> 00:05:08.959
become involved. Most of the disease
burden is found in tropical climates. Asia
56
00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:13.560
has the highest burden, and less
often it is seen in Africa and South
57
00:05:13.600 --> 00:05:20.680
America. It's also found in the
rural southeastern United States. Worldwide, between
58
00:05:20.839 --> 00:05:27.920
four hundred and fifty million and one
billion people were recently diagnosed with whipworm infections.
59
00:05:28.879 --> 00:05:32.680
Most of these cases affect children,
with boys at higher risk than girls.
60
00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:41.480
It's possible that a partial immunity to
the worm develops with age tricuriates.
61
00:05:41.480 --> 00:05:47.040
This is one of three well documented
soil transmitted helminth infections. It's considered to
62
00:05:47.079 --> 00:05:55.240
be a neglected tropical disease by the
World Health Organization and the CDC. The
63
00:05:55.240 --> 00:06:00.519
most common cause of whipworm disease is
the ingestion of infected eggs that live in
64
00:06:00.600 --> 00:06:05.160
the soil. Most often, this
is due to poor sanitary conditions, including
65
00:06:05.240 --> 00:06:12.199
areas where people defecate on the ground
and the use of human feces as fertilizer.
66
00:06:14.279 --> 00:06:20.040
Wash everything before you eat it,
everything you don't know where it's been.
67
00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:28.920
Once ingested, the larvae hatch and
the small intestine, then they migrate
68
00:06:28.959 --> 00:06:33.160
to the large intestine, where they
attach to the mucosal membrane. In severe
69
00:06:33.240 --> 00:06:40.639
infections, the infestation may include the
entire rectum and colon. This leads to
70
00:06:40.720 --> 00:06:46.680
cell destruction and the activation of the
host immune system through lymphocytes, eosinophils,
71
00:06:46.839 --> 00:06:53.720
and plasma cells. Unembryonated eggs will
be dispelled through the feces, where they
72
00:06:53.839 --> 00:06:59.920
become embrionated in two to four weeks, and this makes them infective. The
73
00:07:00.160 --> 00:07:08.600
worm lives between one and four years
in patients who go untreated. Infections usually
74
00:07:08.639 --> 00:07:15.399
occur in people who visit areas where
whipworm infections are common. Patients may experience
75
00:07:15.519 --> 00:07:21.000
abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, painful
passage of stools, abdominal discomfort, and
76
00:07:21.160 --> 00:07:30.000
mucous discharge. Diarrhea and constipation may
also present. Nocturnal passage of stools is
77
00:07:30.040 --> 00:07:38.639
a common complaint among patients with whipworm
infections. Many patients remain asymptomatic if the
78
00:07:38.680 --> 00:07:45.720
worm burden is light. Rectal prolapse
is common in those with heavy worm burdens.
79
00:07:46.800 --> 00:07:55.000
Children with whipworm may develop anemia,
growth deficiency, and impaired cognitive development
80
00:07:55.240 --> 00:08:00.439
due to an iron deficiency and malnutrition, since the worms are taking up all
81
00:08:00.480 --> 00:08:07.399
the nutrients that the children are eating. The diagnosis depends on stool samples taken
82
00:08:07.439 --> 00:08:13.360
from the patient. Microscopic examination should
reveal the presence of eggs. It may
83
00:08:13.439 --> 00:08:18.480
then be possible to determine the number
of eggs in the sample, thus determining
84
00:08:18.519 --> 00:08:26.879
the worm burden. This diagnostic tool
has one pitfall, however, between the
85
00:08:26.959 --> 00:08:31.600
time that the eggs are ingested to
the development of the mature worm. There
86
00:08:31.680 --> 00:08:35.519
is a lag of about three months. During this period, there may be
87
00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:41.320
no signs of an infestation and the
stools may not show evidence of eggs or
88
00:08:41.440 --> 00:08:48.600
shedding. Red blood cells and white
blood cells, specifically eosinophils may be present
89
00:08:48.720 --> 00:08:54.879
in the stool samples, and a
blood test could confirm anemia. Treatment includes
90
00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:03.759
mebendazol, albendazol or ivermectin, Yes, the very same ivermeictin that people claim
91
00:09:03.799 --> 00:09:09.080
will Ward off COVID nineteen. It
doesn't. That thought is totally ridiculous.
92
00:09:09.720 --> 00:09:15.639
I talked about covid and ivermectin in
Season one. Go back and listen.
93
00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:24.080
While all these drugs are suggested for
treatment of whipworm, neither albendizol nor ivermectin
94
00:09:24.159 --> 00:09:28.879
have been approved by the FDA for
the treatment of whipworm. Treatment with a
95
00:09:28.960 --> 00:09:37.240
prescribed antiparasitic normally lasts three days.
As with any helmeth infection, It's important
96
00:09:37.279 --> 00:09:41.039
to note that there may be more
than one parasite involved, so combinations of
97
00:09:41.080 --> 00:09:48.759
antiparasitics may be required. Whipworms tend
to be more resistant to treatment than other
98
00:09:48.799 --> 00:09:54.720
worms. Some studies list the curates
as low as twenty eight to thirty six
99
00:09:54.759 --> 00:10:00.480
percent. While whipworms can still be
present after treatment, the low warm count
100
00:10:00.679 --> 00:10:07.759
may not lead to a significant disease
burden. Tricariasis is not a fatal disease,
101
00:10:07.279 --> 00:10:13.720
but it can cause anemia and nocturnal
stooling. Many patients develop colitis and
102
00:10:13.799 --> 00:10:22.440
malabsorption. Deficiencies of fat soluble vitamins
are not uncommon. Children may develop poor
103
00:10:22.519 --> 00:10:28.879
growth and rectal prolabs. In areas
of the world where the disease is endemic,
104
00:10:30.240 --> 00:10:37.360
mass drug administration may occur. Mass
drug administration will include entire risk groups,
105
00:10:37.559 --> 00:10:43.120
with health care providers going door to
door to offer preventive treatment. The
106
00:10:43.240 --> 00:10:50.320
drugs used are relatively safe and are
either very inexpensive or donated. This practice
107
00:10:50.399 --> 00:10:58.159
is normally performed annually in these higher
risk areas. We'll be talking more about
108
00:10:58.200 --> 00:11:05.000
mass drug administration in a few future
season on Neglected Tropical Diseases. The whole
109
00:11:05.039 --> 00:11:09.559
reason that I chose whipworm as the
first episode in this season is because my
110
00:11:09.679 --> 00:11:16.399
dog, sweet Pea, was diagnosed
with whipworm a few weeks ago. My
111
00:11:16.519 --> 00:11:22.840
dog gets a heartguard wormer every month
like clockwork, so I didn't understand how
112
00:11:22.879 --> 00:11:28.840
she could get whipworm. It turns
out that heartguard doesn't prevent or treat whipworm
113
00:11:30.039 --> 00:11:33.879
or tapeworm. I need to talk
to my vet again about changing her wormer
114
00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:41.679
to something that controls allworms. I
have a special guest in the studio today.
115
00:11:41.279 --> 00:11:46.759
I'm going to let Sweet Pea tell
you about her experience with whipworm.
116
00:11:46.240 --> 00:11:52.799
Then I'll come back to talk about
how the disease affects dogs. Hi.
117
00:11:52.879 --> 00:11:58.639
Everyone, I really didn't want to
talk about this because it's super embarrassing.
118
00:12:00.039 --> 00:12:03.600
It's a lot about poop and some
of my bad habits. I'd much rather
119
00:12:03.679 --> 00:12:09.679
talk about my birthday party at doggie
daycare. You can talk about your birthday
120
00:12:09.679 --> 00:12:16.000
party on TikTok. Right now you
need to talk about worms. Gross,
121
00:12:16.600 --> 00:12:22.279
Okay, I guess it's better to
begin at the beginning. Daycare isn't always
122
00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:28.320
good for dogs. We learn bad
habits there and we get away with everything.
123
00:12:30.759 --> 00:12:35.039
Some daycares are better than others,
but most of the time there are
124
00:12:35.240 --> 00:12:41.679
way too many dogs hanging out and
playing to give much attention to everyone.
125
00:12:41.960 --> 00:12:46.840
I picked up some bad habits too. One of them was eating poop.
126
00:12:46.919 --> 00:12:50.679
I don't know why I do it. It doesn't taste very good, but
127
00:12:50.799 --> 00:12:56.519
my friends sometimes do it, so
I do it too. I'm a follower.
128
00:12:58.519 --> 00:13:01.480
I won't go anywhere near another dog's
poop when I'm out with Jackie,
129
00:13:01.799 --> 00:13:05.759
but all the dogs eat poop at
daycare, so I don't want to be
130
00:13:05.879 --> 00:13:13.919
different. It's kind of a big
deal. Anyway, Enough about peer pressure.
131
00:13:15.639 --> 00:13:20.720
Jackie feeds me two pieces of pineapple
and two sprigs of curly parsley three
132
00:13:20.799 --> 00:13:24.039
times a week to make me stop
eating poop, and that seems to work.
133
00:13:26.320 --> 00:13:30.919
I haven't done it in quite a
while. I really like pineapple,
134
00:13:31.600 --> 00:13:37.399
but parsley is like garnish, isn't
it. I don't like it so much.
135
00:13:39.120 --> 00:13:43.039
Anyway, One day, Jackie noticed
that I was straining to poop.
136
00:13:43.840 --> 00:13:46.320
I had to go, but nothing
was coming out, and when it did
137
00:13:46.360 --> 00:13:52.000
come out, it was really hard. On the way back from our walk,
138
00:13:52.080 --> 00:13:56.399
I had to poop again, but
this time it was really runny and
139
00:13:56.440 --> 00:14:01.240
it had a little blood in it. I went to day and all day
140
00:14:01.320 --> 00:14:05.120
I had really renny poops and there
was a lot of mucus and some blood
141
00:14:05.159 --> 00:14:11.080
in them. I didn't play very
much that day either, I just wanted
142
00:14:11.080 --> 00:14:15.799
to sleep. My tummy hurt,
and I wasn't feeling like being social.
143
00:14:16.360 --> 00:14:20.879
When we got home that night,
I wouldn't eat. I'm a voracious eater.
144
00:14:22.440 --> 00:14:26.320
If I don't eat, there's something
definitely wrong. So Jackie called the
145
00:14:26.440 --> 00:14:31.120
vet and made an appointment for me
to go in the next day. She
146
00:14:31.360 --> 00:14:35.120
was hoping to be one of the
last appointments that night, but they were
147
00:14:35.279 --> 00:14:39.960
just getting ready to close, so
we had to wait. I went to
148
00:14:41.000 --> 00:14:45.480
bed, but I got up twice
during the night to poop. Both times
149
00:14:45.519 --> 00:14:50.000
it was pretty runny, and it
was really stinky too, Not like poop
150
00:14:50.039 --> 00:14:56.000
doesn't stink anyway, but this was
really stinky. The next morning, Jackie
151
00:14:56.000 --> 00:15:01.639
took me to the vet along with
a stool sample. After a lot of
152
00:15:01.799 --> 00:15:09.039
uncomfortable examination, he found out that
I had whipworm. Jackie was pretty upset
153
00:15:09.080 --> 00:15:13.000
when the VET told her that heartguard
doesn't control whipworm, but the VET said
154
00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:18.200
that Heartguard is the best wormer out
there. She's still kind of mad about
155
00:15:18.240 --> 00:15:24.519
the whole thing. Anyway. The
VAT put me on three days of panker,
156
00:15:24.799 --> 00:15:28.360
and when I was all done with
the medication, my worms were gone
157
00:15:28.440 --> 00:15:33.519
and I felt much better. Okay, is that enough of my poopskapads?
158
00:15:35.200 --> 00:15:39.320
Can I talk about my birthday party? Now? You can talk about your
159
00:15:39.360 --> 00:15:43.120
birthday party in a little bit.
I need to get this episode out.
160
00:15:43.639 --> 00:15:50.240
When I drop it, we'll work
on your TikTok video. Okay, but
161
00:15:50.360 --> 00:15:54.360
everyone needs to know about my birthday
party. They will. Let's just get
162
00:15:54.360 --> 00:15:58.720
this done first, Okay. Tell
everyone goodbye and you'll talk to them a
163
00:15:58.759 --> 00:16:04.600
little later. Bye. Everyone,
Thank you for listening to Cause of Death
164
00:16:04.759 --> 00:16:10.480
one hundred seconds to midnight. Watch
out for my video where I talk about
165
00:16:10.519 --> 00:16:15.399
my birthday party. There was no
poop involved, well some, but it
166
00:16:15.440 --> 00:16:18.440
didn't have anything to do with my
birthday party. We're all dogs, we
167
00:16:18.600 --> 00:16:22.759
poop. Okay, sweet pee,
we get it. Go play so I
168
00:16:22.799 --> 00:16:30.360
can finish this. Bye. Everyone. I was pretty worried about my dog.
169
00:16:30.720 --> 00:16:34.639
She's got a genetic disorder called double
murle gene trait, so I thought
170
00:16:34.679 --> 00:16:38.720
that possibly something was really wrong with
her gut and it was a much bigger
171
00:16:38.759 --> 00:16:44.799
deal. I was also worried that
she ate something like a ball or a
172
00:16:44.840 --> 00:16:49.120
toy that got stuck in her intestinal
system. Surgery wasn't in my budget,
173
00:16:49.440 --> 00:16:56.960
even with pet insurance. I tend
to overthink everything and land right on the
174
00:16:56.000 --> 00:17:00.240
worst case scenario, though, so
I freak out over all lot of things.
175
00:17:02.679 --> 00:17:06.559
I'm still mad that the vet prescribed
heartguard when he could have prescribed an
176
00:17:06.559 --> 00:17:11.319
allwormer. The whole situation was rather
maddening. Really, Okay, we're going
177
00:17:11.400 --> 00:17:15.319
to take a break to hear from
our sponsors. Then I'll be back with
178
00:17:15.480 --> 00:17:19.880
the rest of the story. Forty
percent of Americans have a hard time swallowing
179
00:17:19.960 --> 00:17:26.000
pills, and I'm one of them, so I really did not want to
180
00:17:26.039 --> 00:17:30.359
get on a vitamin regimen, even
though I needed it. When it's time
181
00:17:30.440 --> 00:17:36.039
to take your vitamins, large capsules
and pills are out of the question.
182
00:17:37.200 --> 00:17:41.799
We know gummy vitamins exist, but
they're full of sugar and they get stuck
183
00:17:41.799 --> 00:17:45.240
in your teeth, and they only
contain a fraction of the nutrients you need.
184
00:17:45.799 --> 00:17:51.400
Since I found Easy Melts, I
am over the moon to take my
185
00:17:51.519 --> 00:17:56.599
vitamins every morning, because luckily,
Easy Melts has discovered the ultimate vitamin sweet
186
00:17:56.599 --> 00:18:00.640
spot, vitamins that melt in your
mouth, taste like a treat, and
187
00:18:00.720 --> 00:18:07.200
are packed with nutrients ready for absorption, all without an ounce of sugar.
188
00:18:07.599 --> 00:18:15.160
If you want to try a really
really great vitamin product. For a limited
189

204
00:19:48.960 --> 00:19:55.480
had chosen several varieties of melons,
tomatoes, corn beans, and peppers.
205
00:19:56.440 --> 00:20:00.000
I'm still building my order, so

224
00:21:52.279 --> 00:21:56.960
sweetpeas experience with whipworm, and you
know the topic of her next TikTok,
225
00:21:56.920 --> 00:22:03.759
So let's get back to how the
worm affects dogs. These infections are difficult
226
00:22:03.880 --> 00:22:11.000
to detect in dogs. Clinical signs
vary from nothing to intermittent large bowel diarrhea.
227
00:22:11.599 --> 00:22:18.839
Severe infections present as critical and life
threatening. Whipworm infection is often misdiagnosed
228
00:22:18.839 --> 00:22:26.759
as hookworms, roundworms, giardia,
or the ever popular garbage enteritis. Garbage
229
00:22:26.920 --> 00:22:33.359
enteritis was my go to when sweet
Peas started showing signs of infection. She's
230
00:22:33.640 --> 00:22:37.480
always eating something that she shouldn't be
eating, and she and I both pay
231
00:22:37.559 --> 00:22:42.960
for it when she goes out to
poop. Whipworm wasn't even on my radar.
232
00:22:45.279 --> 00:22:51.759
According to MRK Animal Health, this
is common among dog owners and veterinary
233
00:22:51.799 --> 00:22:57.000
professionals. We discount whipworm because the
dogs are getting warmer on a regular schedule.
234
00:22:59.200 --> 00:23:03.839
But Merk also says that there are
three characteristics of whipworm that should keep
235
00:23:03.880 --> 00:23:07.880
them on the list of things to
look out for. Whipworms are patient,
236
00:23:08.359 --> 00:23:18.880
sneaky, and persistent. Canine whipworm
is known as Tricurus vulpus. These worms
237
00:23:18.920 --> 00:23:23.519
also look like whips and can grow
from four to seven centimeters long. The
238
00:23:23.599 --> 00:23:30.640
adult worms live primarily in the secum, while the thick portion of the worm
239
00:23:30.839 --> 00:23:37.440
will remain in the intestinal lumin and
the thinner end will penetrate the secual mucosa.
240
00:23:37.319 --> 00:23:42.799
Adult whipworms live off the dog's mucosal, epithelium, blood, and tissue
241
00:23:42.839 --> 00:23:48.880
fluids. The female worm may lay
up to two thousand eggs in a day,
242
00:23:48.359 --> 00:23:55.519
but she's patient. She doesn't produce
eggs daily. Shedding episodes may occur
243
00:23:55.720 --> 00:24:00.480
days or weeks apart, so there
won't always be worms in a stool sample.
244
00:24:02.039 --> 00:24:06.839
When the female finally does lay eggs, dogs shed them in the environment
245
00:24:07.920 --> 00:24:14.559
Tricurus eggs generally embryonate between nine and
twenty one days, but they're also patient.
246
00:24:15.559 --> 00:24:21.440
They can remain effective in the environment
for years before being ingested by the
247
00:24:21.559 --> 00:24:25.880
unsuspecting dog who just happens to pick
up the ball that rolled in the dirt
248
00:24:25.920 --> 00:24:32.160
patch at the dog park, or
the dog who eats poop. After ingestion,
249
00:24:32.400 --> 00:24:37.359
the larvae hatch and develop in the
mucosa lining of the small intestine for
250
00:24:37.519 --> 00:24:42.119
up to ten days. Then the
cycle begins, and anywhere from seventy four
251
00:24:42.160 --> 00:24:49.440
to ninety days later, the female
will begin shedding more eggs. The usual
252
00:24:49.519 --> 00:24:55.920
down and dirty way to detect worms
is the float test. Basically, a
253
00:24:56.039 --> 00:25:00.200
stool sample is put into a container
of water or saline and the eggs float
254
00:25:00.279 --> 00:25:07.640
to the top. Whipworm eggs,
however, are very dense. They have
255
00:25:07.799 --> 00:25:14.319
a specific gravity of one point one
point five, so rather than using saline,
256
00:25:14.759 --> 00:25:18.720
a sugar solution with a specific gravity
of one point two five must be
257
00:25:18.880 --> 00:25:26.240
used so that the eggs will float. Often, whipworm is diagnosed by ruling
258
00:25:26.319 --> 00:25:33.799
other bacterial and parasite infections out rather
than finding the worms. This happened in
259
00:25:33.839 --> 00:25:38.079
sweet peas case. The worms couldn't
be found, but the vet suspected whipworms
260
00:25:38.119 --> 00:25:44.759
since she didn't have anything else.
Whipworm eggs are thick and they're tough.
261
00:25:45.519 --> 00:25:52.920
They can survive desiccation, extreme temperatures, and even UV radiation. The human
262
00:25:52.000 --> 00:25:59.359
whipworm can survive temperatures from one hundred
and twenty six degrees fahrenheit down to negative
263
00:25:59.480 --> 00:26:07.319
sixty degrees fahrenheit and still ambryonate.
The resilience of these worms makes it highly
264
00:26:07.480 --> 00:26:12.720
likely that they're everywhere in the dog's
environment. Murk cited a recent study of
265
00:26:12.799 --> 00:26:18.920
parasite prevalence in two hundred and eighty
eight dog parks in thirty metropolitan cities.
266
00:26:21.160 --> 00:26:27.559
They found Tricuris vulpus in eighteen percent
of those parks. This means that nearly
267
00:26:27.720 --> 00:26:34.920
one in five dog parks are infested
with whipworms. Now let's get this part
268
00:26:34.960 --> 00:26:40.200
straight. Am I telling you to
keep your dogs away from dog parks and
269
00:26:40.319 --> 00:26:44.920
daycares? Not at all. What
I am telling you is that you need
270
00:26:44.960 --> 00:26:48.079
to talk to your vet and get
them on a good all around worm prevention.
271
00:26:49.759 --> 00:26:56.359
Whipworms are persistent in more ways than
one. The common treatment for whipworms
272
00:26:56.359 --> 00:27:00.319
and dogs is panker, but it
may not get all the eggs that are
273
00:27:00.359 --> 00:27:06.640
circulating in the dog's digestive system.
This means that the infection may not completely
274
00:27:06.759 --> 00:27:12.000
clear after the first treatment. Having
a good preventive wormer will ensure that your
275
00:27:12.079 --> 00:27:15.880
dog doesn't get them in the first
place, so you don't have to worry
276
00:27:15.920 --> 00:27:25.039
about treating the same infection over and
over again. So that's whipworm, no
277
00:27:25.240 --> 00:27:29.559
history at all, but it's a
good cautionary tale for those with dogs that
278
00:27:29.640 --> 00:27:33.559
go out and socialize in dog parks, parks, doggy daycares, and just
279
00:27:33.599 --> 00:27:38.240
about anywhere else that dogs poop.
Are we still talking about poop? I
280
00:27:38.319 --> 00:27:44.799
want to talk about my birthday,
for Heaven's sakes, let me finish.
281
00:27:44.880 --> 00:27:51.400
Then you could talk about your birthday. Thank you all for listening to Cause
282
00:27:51.400 --> 00:27:55.839
of Death one hundred seconds to midnight. If you would like to support the
283
00:27:55.880 --> 00:28:00.200
show, there are several ways you
can do so. The easiest way is
284
00:28:00.240 --> 00:28:06.200
to listen and share these episodes with
everyone you know. I would also love
285
00:28:06.240 --> 00:28:11.160
it if you would stop by Apple
Podcasts or Spotify and leave a five star
286
00:28:11.240 --> 00:28:15.599
review. These two things help the
show grow and move the podcast up the
287
00:28:15.720 --> 00:28:22.480
charts so that others can find it
too. Another way to support the show
288
00:28:22.640 --> 00:28:27.559
is to sign up on either Patreon
or Apple subscriptions. I have some truly
289
00:28:27.799 --> 00:28:33.279
amazing sponsors, and stopping by their
online stores and using the promo codes that
290
00:28:33.319 --> 00:28:38.559
I give you can also help the
show grow and expand. Honestly, I
291
00:28:38.559 --> 00:28:45.200
wouldn't be talking about these sponsors if
I didn't believe in their products. If
292
00:28:45.200 --> 00:28:48.960
you'd like to contact me, please
feel free to email me at Jackie at
293
00:28:49.039 --> 00:28:55.119
cause of Death one hundred scs dot
net, or you can leave a message
294
00:28:55.160 --> 00:29:00.000
on the website at www. Cause
of Death one hundred second dot net.
295
00:29:02.920 --> 00:29:07.160
The show notes are a great place
to find my Patreon page, my website,
296
00:29:07.440 --> 00:29:11.839
my sponsors, and the research that
I used for this episode. I
297
00:29:11.920 --> 00:29:17.440
want to thank my amazing dog,
Sweetpea, for sharing her poop story with
298
00:29:17.599 --> 00:29:25.240
us. I promise the birthday story
is much easier to swallow. Stop talking
299
00:29:25.319 --> 00:29:30.960
about poop. I'll see you in
two weeks when I'll be talking about brain
300
00:29:32.079 --> 00:29:37.880
eating amba and why they're so dangerous. Until then, don't lick the dog
301
00:29:38.000 --> 00:30:07.680
park. Stop stop, stand still, stand
