Throwaway People: The Story of HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS is more than the story of a virus. It is also a story about fear, stigma, inequality, public-health failures, activism, scientific progress, and the people who were too often treated as disposable.

In Throwaway People, Jackie looks at HIV/AIDS, the development of antiretroviral treatment, the history of the AIDS crisis, transmission through the blood supply, and the political and social response that shaped the epidemic.

Because the history of HIV/AIDS isn't only about how a virus spread. It's about how people responded—and what happened to the people society decided weren't worth protecting.
